Sharon Payne - Rally Car Driver,
Women who know how to make split second decisions at high speed and who can rely upon their teammate without question or second guessing have much to offer us and much to share.
Tarmac rallying is one of the most dangerous of all sports, given the speed at which the vehicles travel - often in close proximity to trees, buildings and spectators! It is essential that driver and co-driver remain focused and work as one. Sharon and her co-driver and team mate Helen Lunsmann have both featured on the podium driving in all-girls’ motorsport events in Perth and have finished in the top five in their class when racing against the men.
Sharon started driving competitively five years ago and said there was no argument about who would take the wheel, because as Helen says “Sharon is faster behind the wheel.” For Targa events, competitors are timed against the clock over a series of high-speed special stages. Their GTi Rally car (prepared by GTI Performance Centre) is a dedicated tarmac rally car – a Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 7. Both the car and the girls are very competitive.
Today there are many family connections in the Tarmac Rallying teams, often with family members pitched against each other in different cars, not to mention backing up their teams in the Service Crews.
