Anyango Jane Odongo,
Anyango Jane Odongo was influenced to work with women and girls when she witnessed a sexual relationship between an 11 year old girl and a 39 year old man. She was inspired to create platforms for girls to share as a way of empowering them to manage their lives positively. One of the girls she helped was killed by the police during the passed post election violence which prompted Anyango to mobilize women to protest. This gave birth to Kibera Women for Peace & Fairness, a big organization with more than 820 members all working to ensure peaceful coexistence among different communities staying in Kibera. They make jewelry and sell solar lamps to promote self-reliance among the women.
As a result of her work, Anyango received a Community Peacebuilder Award, This Outstanding Leadership Award, and was nominated for the International Woman of Courage 2011. Her dream is to have a big resource center for the women and girls of Kibera where girls can come and relax to forget about their miseries, and where they can meet and share where they can network with others and read about what is happening across the world.
